Nestled in the Hudson Valley just 12 miles north of New York City, Tappan is one of the oldest and most storied communities in the region. Founded by Dutch settlers in the late 1600s, the hamlet’s name comes from the Lenape people who originally lived here. Over the centuries, Tappan has blended small-town charm with rich historic significance, making it one of the Hudson Valley’s hidden gems.
Tappan played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. The historic DeWint House—George Washington’s headquarters on four occasions—still stands today as a museum and testament to the area’s importance in shaping the nation. Another landmark, the ’76 House, is one of America’s oldest taverns and a favorite local restaurant where history meets fine dining.
In addition to its colonial legacy, Tappan has long been a community of natural beauty. Tree-lined roads, rolling hills, and preserved stone houses give the area a timeless character, while nearby parks, golf courses, and the scenic Hudson River offer recreation year-round.
Today, Tappan is known for its excellent schools, vibrant community spirit, and easy access to both New York City and the best of the Hudson Valley. Buyers are drawn here for the balance it offers: a serene, historic setting paired with modern convenience.
Living at 17 Andre Hill places you in the heart of this remarkable heritage—where history, nature, and modern living come together in one of Rockland County’s most desirable neighborhoods.
The quiet street where this home sits—André Hill—carries with it one of the most dramatic stories of the American Revolution.
In 1780, British officer Major John André conspired with American General Benedict Arnold, who had agreed to betray West Point to the British in exchange for money and rank. André met with Arnold in secret, received documents revealing West Point’s defenses, and attempted to return to British lines in disguise. Fate intervened when André was stopped near Tarrytown by three American militiamen who discovered the incriminating papers hidden in his boot.
Brought to American headquarters, André was tried as a spy. General George Washington himself oversaw the proceedings, which were held in Tappan. Despite his role as an enemy officer, André’s courage, dignity, and gentlemanly manner quickly won the admiration of the townspeople—and even of Washington’s officers. Letters from the time describe him as courteous, cultured, and refined, a man who bore his fate with grace. During his brief captivity in Tappan, locals were said to bring him small comforts and visit him, touched by his character.
On October 2, 1780, Major André was executed by hanging in Tappan, just steps from where modern homes now stand. Though it was a tragic moment in history, his story has lived on. So strong was the impression he left that the hill where he spent his final days was later named André Hill, in memory of the man who became beloved even in the midst of war.
Today, walking the quiet lanes of André Hill, one can still feel a sense of history. Owning a home here means becoming part of a neighborhood whose very street name recalls one of the most human and dramatic chapters of America’s founding story.
